I'm still keeping my regular job and yet, the lure of freelancing is so irresistible that I'm planning to go full-time. I have some prospects which I believe can help me get enough so I can make ends meet. Do you think I should go ahead and take the plunge into full-time freelancing?

Hi There,

This a question many freealancers face eventually. Let's face it, you want to do your passion for a living, especially if means not working for others (I spent 15 years working for Corporate America with tremendous frustration).

A few things that helped me:

  1. Have 6 months of expenses saved up. Most people are more productive with their work when they are not worrying about money.

  2. Look at your finances. Are there any items you can but back on? Do you need cable or satellite television? Most freelancers work so much that really don't have time for television. Do you need all of the add-ons to your cell phone? If you have a home phone, can you get along without it and use a cell phone and Skype?

  3. Once you have slashed any unnecessary financial items you can see what your monthly budget really looks like. Start pricing out your work to see how much time you will need to do your writing projects in order to make enouhg money.

  4. I recently read that the most important skill to have in the new economy is the ability to network (it's really always been like that). Network like crazy (especially on professional sites like LinkedIn)

These are just a few things that helped me.

Good Luck!

Thanks Nathan for these awesome answers. I wonder if I really can give up my addiction for TV.. but I guess, I can watch live streaming online so long as it doesn't affect my productivity. I think I'll have to save up like you wrote here. Wish me luck! ;)

Good Luck Shaleen!

Working for yourself is far better than working for someone else. I don't care how many hours I have to work. I thought you might find the below article interesting. It's a fun read, but Steve really drives the point home very well.

I thought I would never have a reason to work after the 21st...but it looks like that good old guy calculated rapture day a few months ahead haha... Now, he's on primetime TV saying he made a miscalculation: Not May, but October. I rest my case... :)
